Pioneering Change: Taiwan Life Insurance’s Vision for a Healthier, Sustainable Future
As Taiwan approaches 2025 and faces the challenges of a super-aged society, businesses are increasingly called upon to address societal issues and promote public health. Taiwan Life Insurance, the country’s first life insurer, has long been a pioneer in fostering active ageing and health management. Through initiatives like the Three-Generation Power Walk (祖孫三代健走), Taiwan Life has successfully united generations in prioritising wellness and fostering intergenerational connections.
In September 2024, Taiwan Life received the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Award at the British Chamber of Commerce in Taipei’s Better Business Awards. This recognition highlights the company’s exceptional contributions to public health, environmental sustainability, and forward-thinking CSR strategies.
Innovative Solutions for an Ageing Society
Guided by the principle that "insurance is a public service industry," Taiwan Life has consistently responded to societal needs with impactful CSR initiatives. Since 2012, the Three-Generation Power Walk has encouraged families to embrace health management together, strengthening bonds across generations. This initiative makes health a daily priority while promoting active ageing.
Taiwan Life has also redefined insurance by moving beyond traditional claims-based services to proactive risk prevention. By fostering health awareness as a foundation for "health assets," the company empowers individuals and businesses to reduce medical and financial risks. This innovative approach aligns personal and corporate interests with sustainable societal development.
Gamifying Health for All Generations
The success of the Three-Generation Power Walk has been amplified by digital tools. Taiwan Life’s TeamWalk App gamifies health management, encouraging younger generations to inspire their elders to stay active. The app tracks exercise, calorie expenditure, and sleep patterns, transforming wellness into an engaging, accessible activity.
Originally developed for corporate group insurance clients, the app also promotes employee wellness. Over the past three years, the TeamWalk Corporate Health Awards (TeamWalk 健康企業大賞) have logged 24 billion steps—equivalent to circling Taiwan 16,000 times—and planted over 220 trees in Taichung and Kaohsiung. This programme seamlessly integrates personal wellness with environmental action, showcasing how health initiatives can benefit entire communities.
Making a Measurable Impact on Society
Taiwan Life emphasises that the true value of CSR lies in measurable outcomes. A Social Return on Investment (SROI) analysis of the Three-Generation Power Walk revealed that every NT$1 invested generates NT$5.51 in social value. Surveys further indicate that over 90% of participants reported increased physical activity, improved family interactions, and reduced loneliness, demonstrating the programme’s tangible benefits.
To ensure inclusivity, Taiwan Life launched the Grandparents’ Shuttle Service (爺奶專車), providing transportation and volunteer support for seniors in rural areas. Volunteers also assist participants in using the TeamWalk App, bridging the digital divide and empowering older adults to embrace technology for health management. These efforts strengthen community ties while amplifying the initiative’s impact.
Merging Wellness with Sustainability
Taiwan Life extends its CSR focus to include environmental conservation, merging health promotion with sustainability. Since 2022, the company has repurposed event materials into eco-friendly bags, emphasising resource recycling. By hosting events at venues like Taipei Zoo and Taichung Park, Taiwan Life combines fitness activities with opportunities for conservation learning and cultural education, turning every step into a meaningful contribution to environmental awareness.
Through strategic media partnerships, Taiwan Life has amplified its sustainability message to a wider audience, highlighting its commitment to environmental stewardship. These efforts set a strong example of how businesses can integrate environmental protection with social responsibility.
Building a Healthier, More Sustainable Future
Looking ahead, Taiwan Life plans to promote comprehensive health management encompassing physical, mental, and financial well-being. The company aims to expand its use of digital technology and AI to help users monitor health data and assess risks with precision. By deepening collaborations with NGOs, academia, and businesses, Taiwan Life seeks to pool resources and expertise to advance public health and environmental sustainability.
Taiwan Life’s innovation and professionalism demonstrate how businesses can create lasting value for society and the environment. The company calls on others to embed CSR into their core values and adapt to global challenges. Together, by embedding CSR into their values and embracing global challenges, organisations can collectively build a healthier, more sustainable future.
