AHDB East Meats West Luncheon British Quality Pork Tasting Event

TAIPEI (BCCTaipei News) — As consumers' habits change and food safety advances, people consume more and better meat. Consumption of high-quality pork has been gradually increasing, and British pork especially has become a highly appreciated choice for its superb quality, absence of clenbuterol, trustworthiness and traceability. This year, the UK is vigorously promoting British pork in Taiwan, a mature market likely to embrace the excellence of British pork.

Within this context, the UK Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) and the British Chamber of Commerce in Taipei (BCCTaipei) hosted the AHDB East Meats West Luncheon, a British premium pork tasting event, at the Regent Taipei on March 15. At the tasting luncheon, renowned chefs from Britain and Taiwan presented their pork-centered culinary creations rooted in the British and Taiwanese cuisines. The two courses of four dishes each paid homage to the British and Taiwanese traditions, and showcased how innovative and diverse cooking with pork products can be, from tender cuts to hearty broths, and much more.

According to the most recent statistics from Taiwan’s Council of Agriculture, Taiwan consumes about 900,000 tons of pork per year – that’s around 35.32 kg per person. With such high demand in Taiwan, John Dennis, the Representative at the British Office in Taipei noted:  “We were delighted when Taiwan opened its doors to British pork in August 2018.  Since then, its popularity has soared, reaching an export value of over GBP 11 million, or roughly TWD 418 million by the end of 2021.  It’s great to see British pork growing so popular so quickly in Taiwan’s households and restaurants, and seeing it being prepared and enjoyed in so many culinary ways across Taiwan. I hope that through this event, everyone will experience and understand how delicious and healthy our British premium pork is.”

Representatives of meat importers from all over Taiwan, members of the BCCTaipei and many others attended. Susan Stewart, ADHB’s senior export manager for the Asia-Pacific, introduced British pork farming to the guests through a live broadcast connection, and conveyed her best wishes and bon appétit to everyone, adding: ”The UK is famous for its high-quality pork, underpinned by high environmental and animal welfare standards – with quality guaranteed from farm to fork.  Uniquely, 40% of the sow herd is kept outdoors in the natural environment – our temperate climate is perfect for this and for producing healthy, local pig feed. In addition, our pork supply chain is fully assured and independently audited from farm, through approved transport operators, to highly regulated dedicated pork processors.  This ensures our pork is produced to the highest standards, resulting in high-quality, tender and flavorsome pork.”

The UK attaches great importance to the Asia-Pacific, and hopes that consumers in this region may discover the superior quality of British pork, expertly produced by British farmers who care for the environment, their animals and consumers worldwide.
