Tips on working from home
The Coronavirus outbreak has forced most businesses to shut offices, meaning staff will be working from home for an extended period of time.
While this might be a challenging adjustment, we have compiled some of the advice from the resources available at the Coronavirus Hub to help you through the lock down period.
Look after your wellbeing
Now you are working from home, it is still important to maintain regular hours and routine. Humans are creatures of habit, so a regular schedule is important – set one, and stick to it. If you are new to home working, try to adhere to your normal office routine as much as possible. Get up, get dressed and ‘arrive’ at your desk 5 to 10 minutes early to go through emails and create your daily task list. Then, when the working day is done, log off and focus instead on your personal activities to avoid burnout.

Set clear expectations:
Employers and employees should be practical, flexible and sensitive to each other. Home working may be a challenge for managers and employees, particularly if they’re used to working together face-to-face.
It’s important to build up a healthy relationship of trust and confidence.
Employers and managers should make sure that everyone working from home knows what’s expected of them.
This includes agreeing:
- when employees will be available to work
- how they will keep in touch
- how work-life balance will be managed, for example taking regular breaks and switching off from work at the end of the day
- rules around storing information and data protection
- how performance will be managed and measured
- who employees should contact if they have any problems or their circumstances change

Health and Safety:
Did you know employers have the same health and safety responsibilities for home workers?
When someone is working from home, even if temporarily, it is important to consider the following:
- How will you keep in touch with your employees/employer?
- What work activities will be done (and for how long)?
- Can it be done safely?
- Do protective control measures need to be put in place?
