Remembrance Day 2009

by POW Taiwan on 2009-11-11

Dear Media and Community Friends,

Once again I am happy to announce that the Taiwan POW Camps Memorial Society in co-operation with the British Trade and Cultural Office in Taipei is holding the annual Remembrance Day Event on Sunday, November 15, 2009.

This event is held every year in November near Remembrance Day (November 11th) to pay tribute to those veterans who suffered and died for our freedom. It also serves to highlight the story of the former allied prisoners of war (POWs) who were held captive on Taiwan by the Japanese during World War II and forced to work as slaves here, and to ensure that what they suffered will never be forgotten.

Please see the attached (virus-free) announcement for details about the weekend’s events.

We would like to ask you to please put the announcement in your newspaper – preferably in either or both weekend editions around November 1- 2 and / or November 7-8, in order to let those in the community know about the event and how they can take part. Please do your best to help us publicize this important event.

We would also invite you to send a reporter and photographer to Jinguashi on November 15th to cover the event. Bus transportation is available by contacting Clare Lear at the British Trade and Cultural Office in Taipei to make a reservation.

If you would like to attend the event, please register your interest with the British Trade and Cultural Office in Taipei by contacting:

Clare Lear at the British Trade and Cultural Office in Taipei Tel: 02 8758-2056 or email to: Clare.Lear@fco.gov.uk

If you require further information or clarification about the Taiwan POWs or the event, you may visit our website at www.powtaiwan.org  or contact me at (02) 8660-8438 or by email at society@powtaiwan.org .

We thank you for your participation in the past, and we hope that you will be able to help promote and also attend this year’s event. It will mean so much to the former POWs, and will ensure that their story is told and that they are not forgotten. I thank you for your interest and I look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely,

Michael Hurst   MBE
