Nara McDonald, Camp Taiwan Addresses the British Chamber Women in Business Network

On June 8th 2011, local and international business women from across Taipei turned out at Hotel Éclat for the June British Chamber Women in Business Event to hear guest speaker Nara McDonald, Camp Taiwan. An educator and an entrepreneur Nara’s latest project has been to bring the tradition of North American style organized camping to Taiwan .

Summer Camp is somewhat of a tradition in Nara’s family, and since her first experience of attending Summer Camp back in her native Canada Nara has been hooked.  Nara's father was a career diplomat for the Canadian Foreign Service and she grew up in Brazil, China, Pakistan, UK, Ethiopia and Kenya. From the age of six, she returned each summer to Quebec and attended her beloved bilingual Summer Camp for girls on the banks of Lac Ouereau.

Nara gave a very honest and passionate account of the pleasures and challenges of starting a family business in Taiwan. She shared personal anecdotes of her venture into the green world of adventure / eco / education entrepreneurship and provided useful insights into how to think about your business, avoiding the pitfalls and making it a success.

About Nara McDonald

Nara studied Education at Bishops University and University of Ottawa and started her career in Ottawa in Early Childhood Education working for the Ottawa Board of Education. Nara came to Taiwan to pursue her interests in teaching and administration as the Director of an international kindergarten/preschool. 2003 was a big year of transition with her new husband Tom and daughter Emma, Nara moved from Taipei out to the northern slopes of Yangming Shan National Park to start Camp Taiwan. Now in its 8th year, Camp Taiwan provides Outdoor Education programs for many of Taiwan's International Schools. Camp Taiwan's pristine 80 acres is also a lively playground for corporate teambuilding events, weekend family camps and Taiwan's leading summer camp for kids.
