British Chamber of Commerce in Taipei Meets with Visiting British Parliamentary Delegation

led by Mr Nigel Evans, Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons

On June 3rd 2011, Members from the British Chamber of Commerce in Taipei (台北市英僑商務協會) met at the Shangri-La Far Eastern Hotel Taipei for a top level meeting with the visiting British Parliamentary delegation led by Nigel Evans, Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons.

During the meeting business opportunities and barriers to trade were discussed.  Peter Crowhurst, Chairman, British Chamber of Commerce in Taipei called on the delegation to continue to promote both the UK and Taiwan as easy places to do business and very relevant investment locations. He went on to highlight areas of potential growth for UK companies to participate in including urban regeneration, financial services and investment, infrastructure, healthcare and technology projects.

Several topics of concern to Chamber members were discussed. These included issues surrounding acceptance of international standards/certification bodies and test reports, intellectual property rights, brand plagiarism and the practice of using the lowest price criteria when awarding construction and infrastructure projects.  Those present were also urged to promote the UK as a tourist destination to the Taiwan market, pointing out that the lift on visa restrictions and the availability of direct flights make this a very credible business opportunity.

The Chamber followed up on its previous discussion held with the All-Parliamentary delegation that visited Taiwan in January – discussions ensued with regard to student visas and the provision by the UK to provide further opportunities for students to stay on after their studies and work.  The Chamber was advised that progress was being made in this area.

The Chamber also highlighted its participation in the recent Taiwan Britain Business Council meeting held in Taipei in May.  Overall the meeting went very well and received positive media coverage.

The Chamber encouraged those present to further engage with Taiwan and that said that the Chamber was well positioned to help and support the British Trade and Cultural Office in its mission to further develop bi-lateral trade.

The British Chamber delegation was led by Mr Peter Crowhurst - Chairman, British Chamber of Commerce and Senior Vice President at ING Real Estate and fellow members including Marcus Clinch, Director, British Chamber of Commerce and of Counsel at Eiger Law, Mike Robinson - Invensys Rail Limited, Margaret Tongue - British Trade & Cultural Office and Lisa Hsu- W&F Law Firm.

Mr. Chih-chen Yi, the deputy Director of Taipei Representative Officer in London escorted the British Parliamentary delegation comprised of Lords and MPs; including
