Women form the bedrock of most societies yet are limited in their access to economic opportunities. In a large slice of the world, girls are uneducated and women marginalized, and it’s not an accident that those same countries are disproportionately mired in poverty and chaos. The women in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are no exception. -Lucy Hobgood-Brown, HandUp Congo
The BCCT is honoured to co-host this special breakfast meeting, inviting Lucy Hobgood-Brown to speak. Lucy, who grew up in the DRC and is the co-founder of HandUp Congo (www.handupcongo.org), will share her views about how a focus on women and girls is one of the most effective ways to flight global poverty. Lucy, who lived in Taipei from 1993-94 and still maintains strong friendships here, will bring some good news stories from Africa, and talk about some of the amazing women who are making a difference in a country suffering from what is known as Africa’s World War.
HandUp Congo is a non-governmental organization which supports a number of poverty alleviation and capacity building programs in the DRC.
