The SOS Children’s Village of Taiwan in Taoyuan has been selected by the BCCT’s General Committee as the designated charity for this year’s annual Christmas Fundraising Auction & Luncheon and two-thirds of net proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to support this charity’s work in the community.

As some of you may know we supported this charity last year, and our donation was used for urgent ceiling repairs & fire-proofing to a class-room area, kitchen repairs, as well as standard food, schooling and related expenses. This year the BCCT’s donation will be used to transform a class-room area into a library, kitchen repairs to additional housing units and help cover school tuition fees for the young people.

The SOS Children’s Village was established in 1970 and took in orphans and abandoned babies. In 1991, in keeping with the changing needs of society, its focus moved to taking care of abused as well as emotionally troubled young people. The Chamber endorses the charity’s work, namely its commitment to promoting the healthy development of these young people’s physical, emotional and spiritual state, and providing them with the foundations necessary to grow to become responsible, positive adults able to contribute to society.

One of the British Chamber’s key beliefs is that an organization is a member of the society in which it operates, and as such it follows that one of its duties is to work in different ways to improve the quality of life of people in that society. Over the years the British Chamber of Commerce has raised in excess of NT$5.7 million for various community-based charities with a proven track record of making a real difference.
