In his address to the four major foreign business Chambers in Taipei, Dr. Ma
will present his economic platform and discuss important economic issues
with the foreign business community.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Ma Ying-jeou was Mayor of Taipei from 1998 to 2006 and Chairman of the
Kuomintang, the major opposition political party, from 2005 to 2007. He
announced his candidacy for the 2008 Presidential Election in February this
year. During his two terms as Mayor of Taipei, Dr. Ma maintained approval
ratings averaging 70 percent.
Dr. Ma was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Taiwan. He received his LL.B
from National Taiwan University in 1972; LL. M. from New York University in
1976; and S.J.D from Harvard Law School in 1981. He worked briefly in a Wall
Street law firm after graduation, before returning to Taiwan to serve as the
Deputy Director of the First Bureau of the Presidential Office and also as
English interpreter to then-President Chiang Ching-kuo. He was appointed to
be the KMT’s Deputy Secretary General for International Affairs in 1984;
Chairman of the Research, Development, and Evaluation Commission of the
Executive Yuan in 1988; Senior Vice Chairman of the Mainland Affairs Council
in 1990; Minister of Justice in 1993; and Minister of State in 1996. He also
concurrently taught law at the National Chengchi University from 1981 to
1998.
