Guest Speaker:
Dame Ellen MacArthur B&Q Skipper, World Record Holder
RULE BRITANNIA, Britannia rule the waves! And so it was centuries
ago, the British Empire ruled the waves and now there is a modern-day
heroine to salute.
28-year old, 5’2” Ellen MacArthur, a very experienced solo sailor, broke
the previous world record on Monday, 7 February 2005, at 10:29 p.m. She
crossed the finish line in the 75’ trimaran, B&Q, off Ushant to set a
new solo, non-stop sailing round-the-world record -- 71 days, 14 hours,
18 minutes and 33 seconds.
Battered by gale force winds, suffered a head injury, endured deep
fatigue, body aching all over and mental strain beyond our
comprehension, Ellen uttered these words minutes after crossing the
line: "I cannot believe it, I absolutely cannot believe it. It hasn't
sunk in yet. I don't think until I see faces again that it's really
going to sink in. It's been an absolutely unbelievable journey, both
physically and mentally. I'm absolutely overjoyed."
Now, thanks to B&Q, official sponsor for this impressive record journey,
MacArthur will be sailing to Taiwan as part of the Asia Record Circuit
2006. BritCham is truly proud to present this amazing lady as the guest
speaker at this special April dinner.
The presentation begins with a DVD introducing Ellen and her quest,
followed by a Q&A session with the guest of honour. BritCham has ordered
a number of copies of the book written by Ellen MacArthur chronicling
her incredible journey. These will be available for sale at the dinner,
accompanied by an autograph session.
Indeed, this is a rare opportunity to meet such an inspiring
individual.
Cancellations received less than 48 hours
prior to an event will incur a penalty charge.
